Stainless Steel 304/ 304L Plate

Stainless steel is an alloy of Iron with a minimum of 10.5% Chromium. Chromium produces a thin layer of oxide on the surface of the steel known as the’passive layer’. This prevents any further corrosion of the surface. Increasing the amount of Chromium gives an increased resistance to corrosion.Stainless steel also containsvarying amounts of Carbon, Silicon and Manganese. Other elements such as Nickel and Molybdenum may be added to impart other useful properties such as enhanced formability and increased corrosion resistance.

304 and 304L stainless steel plates are part of the austenitic family of stainless steel and they are one of the most versatile and widely used varieties of stainless plate. They are a relatively low cost stainless product and used in a variety of applications. 304 grades have excellent low temperature properties and respond well to hardening by cold working. 304 grades have good welding characteristics and post weld annealing is not normally required to restore performance. 304 SS has excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of different media. Grade 304L is widely used by the fabrication industry and all standard welding techniques can be used on 304L plates and 304L pipes. The “L” in 304L stands for “Low Carbon Content”, indicating a maximum carbon content of 0.035%. The “H” in 304H stands for “High Carbon Content”, indicating carbon content of not less than 0.04% and not more than 0.10%.
